LUTE OLSON AWARD "PLAYER OF THE WEEK" HONORS

March 4, 2013

BOSTON (MA) -- Duke's Ryan Kelly and Creighton's Doug McDermott share the Lute Olson award national player of the week honors.

Kelly played for the first time since Jan. 8. The 6-foot-11 senior helped lead the Blue Devils to a 79-76 win over No. 5 Miami, scoring a career-high 36 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the field, including 7-of-9 from three-point range, and 9-of-12 from the free throw line. He also added seven rebounds.

McDermott helped lead Creighton to its first outright regular season Missouri Valley title since 2001. The 6-foot-8 junior had 32 points and 11 rebounds in Wednesday’s 80-62 win at Bradley, making 12-of-17 shots and all seven free-throw attempts. On Saturday, in front of the second-largest crowd in Creighton history (18,613), McDermott had with 41 points, six rebounds and three assists in a 91-79 win over Wichita State. McDermott made 15-of-18 shots from the floor and 5-of-8 from long-range.

The Lute Olson Award is presented annually to the nation's top Division I player who has played at least two seasons with his respective team. Freshmen and first-year transfers can be named to the All-America team, but are not eligible to receive the Player of the Year honors.

The award is named in honor of coaching great Lute Olson, who won 780 games in 34 seasons, 24 of which were spent at the University of Arizona. During that stretch he led the Wildcats to 11 Pac-10 Conference titles, 23 consecutive NCAA Tournaments, four Final Four appearances and a National Championship in 1997.
